Parlar Foundation Awards for 2022
We proudly announce that the Department of Biological Sciences received two awards from Parlar Foundation. Prof. Zeki Kaya was awarded the 2022 Science Award and Prof. Sreeparna Banerjee received the 2022 METU Excellence in Teaching Award.

Prof. Zeki Kaya works on plant speciation and evolution. The main research activities focus on population genetics of trees, speciation, and evolution of plant species and ancient DNA studies related to crop domestication and evolution.

Prof. Sreeparna Banerjee works on colorectal cancer and metabolism. The primary focus of the laboratory is on pathways regulating metabolism in cancer cells. Deregulated metabolism of proteins, lipids, and fatty acids is increasingly being appreciated as a hallmark of cancer. The signaling pathways regulating these metabolic changes, therefore, need to be examined to better understand the metabolic deregulations and novel targets for drug development. Additionally, starving cancer cells of specific nutrients and amino acids can also increase their sensitivity the chemotherapy. Using colorectal cancer as a model, our laboratory systematically focuses on pathways related to lipid and carbohydrate metabolism and the role played by these bioactive compounds in the regulation of inflammatory pathways.
Parlar Foundation Announcement
We remember Prof. Dr. Mustafa N. Parlar (1925-1980 with respect)…
Prof. Dr. Mustafa Parlar, took his office as Education Director after the Middle East Technical University was founded in 1956 and he served as founder dean of Faculty of Engineering. Middle East Technical University, in particular the Faculty of Engineering was shaped by our lecturer Parlar’s contribution which reflects his belief and hope for the future of the young Turkish Republic in the light of science. We have lost Prof. Dr. Mustafa Parlar in his young age in 19th December, 1980. He serves as a model with his researches for the young generation where he pioneered the change with scientific sense of thought and opened the path for the researchers whom he lectured.
Prof. Dr. Mustafa Parlar, was a social driver for the technologies which support the industry, he promoted and provided beneficial information and skills in order to allow the new generations gain such skills. Briefly he lead the way for his students with the sense of ‘university for society’. We remember our Parlar lecturer with love and respect who; in his short term of life he inspired us with his dreams, deep interest in engineering, hardworking and successes.
Each year our Foundation receives applications for Science, Service and Research Encourage Awards in order to emphasize the importance he attached to scientific production and generalization of related information. For 2022 numerous valued application is received. We sincerely congratulate these respected scientists who received awards.
