Prof. Dr. Aykut Kence (1946–2014)

Prof. Dr. Aykut Kence served at METU Department of Biological Sciences from 1974 until his retirement, serving as Department Chair from 1977–1979 and 1988–1994. He was a pioneering figure in evolutionary biology, population genetics, ecology, and conservation biology in Turkey, mentoring countless scientists throughout his career.

Prof. Dr. Emel Arınç (1940–2021)

Emeritus Faculty member of METU Biological Sciences and TÜBA Honorary Member, Prof. Dr. Emel Arınç conducted groundbreaking international research in molecular pharmacology, biochemical toxicology, and cytochrome P450 monooxygenase enzyme systems, receiving numerous prestigious honors including the TÜBİTAK Science Award.

Prof. Dr. Mesude İşcan (1954–2012)

Prof. Dr. Mesude İşcan joined the department in 1976 and served as the Chair of Biological Sciences from 2000 to 2003. Her distinguished research in biochemical and molecular toxicology earned her the Sedat Simavi Health Sciences Award, alongside long-standing leadership roles in the Turkish Biochemical Society.

Prof. Dr. Nafi Gürdal Alaeddinoğlu (1945–2020)

Serving at METU from 1976 until his retirement in 2005, Prof. Dr. Gürdal Alaeddinoğlu served as Department Chair (1997–2000) and Head of the Biotechnology Program. As a founder of the METU Biotechnology Research Unit, he pioneered bacterial genetics and recombinant DNA technology in Turkey.
