AREA OF RESEARCH
The Primary focus on Plant Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Genetics: Crop Plants (wheat, barley, lentil) Molecular and biochemical characterization of crop plants under abiotic stress conditions; salt, drought, cold, heat, and metal stresses. Understanding of the abiotic stress tolerance mechanisms, Gene expression studies (Microarray Technologies), Genetic transformation (Particle bombardment and Agrobacterium-mediated gene transformation), and characterization of the transgenic plants. Optimization of plant regeneration systems; tissue culture (using different ex-plants). Our laboratory's first gene transfer study was achieved on a tobacco plant using the Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer technique in 1993. Second focus on Biofuels: Biological Hydrogen Production from organic acids and different biomass using Purple Non-Sulfur Bacteria (PNSB) in Photobioreactors. Genetic modifications of bacterial strains of PNSB for improvement of hydrogen yield and productivity. Gene expression studies of PNS bacteria under different physiological conditions by microarray analysis has been achieved. Biodiesel production by using microalgae in bioreactors has been achieved successfully.
