Faculty Position in Plant Taxonomy and Systematics

The Department of Biological Sciences at Middle East Technical University (METU) invites applications for a full-time faculty position in Plant Taxonomy and Systematics at all academic ranks (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor). The level of appointment will be determined based on the candidate’s academic credentials and research record.

We seek a candidate with a strong research program in plant systematics, taxonomy, and phylogenomics with demonstrated expertise in integrative approaches combining classical taxonomy (morphology, anatomy, nomenclature) and modern molecular/phylogenomic methods to address questions of plant diversity, classification, and evolution.

Research Expectations

The successful candidate is expected to

  • Develop an independent, externally funded research program in plant taxonomy, and systematics and evolution.

  • Take steps to establish a METU herbarium.

  • Participate in national and international collaborations.

  • Supervise graduate students.

METU provides access to departmental laboratories and core facilities. A competitive start-up package will be provided in line with institutional policies and the candidate’s research needs.

Teaching Responsibilities

The appointee will contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching in the Department of Biological Sciences. Expected teaching areas include

  • Undergraduate courses: Plant Biodiversity and ConservationPlant Systematics and Taxonomy, Plant Population Biology, and related theoretical and applied courses.

  • Graduate courses: Specialized topics aligned with the candidate’s expertise.

All instruction at METU is conducted in English. The candidate is expected to contribute to curriculum development and maintain high teaching standards.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Plant Biology, Botany, Evolutionary Biology, or a closely related field.

  • Strong publication record in reputable international journals.

  • Demonstrated international research experience (e.g., postdoctoral training or equivalent) is strongly preferred.

  • Evidence of research independence and potential to secure external funding.

  • Commitment to teaching excellence and student mentorship.

Research Environment and Infrastructure

A start-up package will be provided, commensurate with the candidate’s research program. The university actively supports applications to major funding schemes (e.g., European Research Council (ERC), Horizon Europe, MSCA, TÜBİTAK).
